Maybe it was the heat that made them do it

It’s been crazy hot here the last two weeks and we have been seriously appreciating the fact that we have central air. When we looked at the house and saw that I was like – Oh, that’s nice, but you really never run it for more then a week. My Noland however was totally stoked and I do believe that was one of the major selling points for him (for you none Northwesterners – our average summer temp is nice 79 and practically no humidity – no one has central air) how smart he is!

So being that we have central air and no where else does, weeknight evenings have pretty much been a series of go have some happy hour drinks somewhere and then head home to chill in the chill air. Being that we’ve had some drinks, our minds are not in the mood for any serious reading or movies that make you think. Being that it’s hotter then it should be in Portland, our bodies are not in the mood to do anything involving activity. So mindless television it is. Being that it’s summer, there’s not much on – although I will admit to having been sucked into Rock Star: INXS – but with a dozen variations on each and half a dozen channels that show them - there is always an endless stream of CSI and Law & Order reruns on. So I’ve been watching a lot of that crap lately. And I just started to notice a mildly amusing trend. If there is a kid involved anywhere in the plot – they’re the one who did it.

Two little girls murder a crazy old cat lady ‘cause she won’t give them a cat.
A little boy murders his neighbor, just ‘cause he’s nuts.
A little boy murders his brother because he told the kids at school that he wet the bed.
A group of kids murder another kid to steal his money.
A teenage girl murders her friend so that she can get her spot on the gymnastics team.

So what’s up with the writers of these shows? Do they think it has shock value? That the audience won’t suspect an innocent little kid and then they get to reveal “the big twist?” Watched ‘Children of the Corn’ one to many times? Maybe they just think kids are inherently evil?

And why isn’t there any outrage from the FCC or PRC or FTC or any of those other censorship happy groups? Don’t they realize that children will watch these programs and be inspired to kill their siblings after they take the last piece of cake? It will happen. You can count on it. And these…these shows will be to blame….. won’t someone please look out for the children?!?!

I do see what you are saying. Unfortunatealy it hits a little too close to home.
I feel that there is "the drama" in these catching evening successful dramas, but there is actually real time, horrible events that happen semi-locally that seldom or briefly surface on the local media, making it easier to swallow some storylines as elaborated fiction.
The example that is most recent in my world is...
Man faces murder charge
W.S. girl strangled, assaulted
A Warm Springs man, Aaron Jason Muniz Wewa, 22, will be arraigned in the U.S. District Court in Portland Aug. 16, on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated sexual assault of a minor in connection with the death of a 14-year-old Warm Springs girl.
Tara Tufti, who would have been a freshman at Madras High School next month, died of strangulation, according to an autopsy report from the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office.
In the affadavit filed by Jason T. Ghetian, special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Wewa reportedly went to the workplace of his former girlfriend around noon on Aug. 1, and whispered to her that he had killed someone and was going to turn himself in.
According to Detective Glen Dunsbergen of the Warm Springs Police Department, the girlfriend expressed disbelief, so the two went to his house, where she saw for herself that what he had told her was true. One of the two other people in the house, who had been unaware of the death until that time, called the police.
When police responded to the residence, located at 1677 Shepard Lane in Warm Springs, they found Tufti wrapped in a sheet under Wewa's bed.
Wewa was arrested at his residence, and charged with murder and aggravated sexual assault.
During his interview at the Warm Springs Police Department, Wewa told police that he was driving around late Sunday night and spotted Tufti sitting on the steps of the Warm Springs Community Center. He gave her a ride in his van until he ran out of gas, and then took her over to his house.
After he drank beer and wine and smoked methamphetamine, the report says that he choked her to death, sexually assaulted her, and then wrapped her in a sheet and hid her under his bed when a family member came home the next morning.
Wewa was transferred to the custody of the U.S. Marshal's Service in Portland. He was booked at the Multnomah County Jail in Portland on Aug. 2, at 3:03 p.m.
The incident is under investigation by the Warm Springs Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which handles murders that occur on Indian reservations, according to Joe Conli, supervisor for the Bend, Pendleton and Medford offices of the FBI.
Tara Tufti was remembered as very helpful by people at the Spechtrum Youth Center in Warm Springs. Anna Castile, program coordinator for the center, said Tufti spent a lot of time at the center.
"She was here on a regular basis," Castile said. "She was always right there helping me and would participate in events and activities."
The things that are the most disturbingly to me is the fact that he drove around...STOPPING AT MY MOTHER NEIGHBORS HOMES. He apparently went to her neighbor to the south, her brother-in-law, did not forcibly enter, ate their food, and LEFT A NOTE! Then he proceded to her neighbor to the north, and kicked a door in.
Threre are things that happen on the reservation that are horrible, but would be Newsworthy if they happened here. There are many things that happen there-on the rez- that match the Dramas, but do not make mention in PDX---Even on the Fox.
